Timber vs WPC Decking: What's Right for Your Pakenham Home?

Both timber and WPC composite decking hold up well in Melbourne's climate. Here's how to weigh up cost, upkeep and looks before you commit.

Decking is the job we get asked about most, and one of the first decisions is material: classic timber, or a WPC (wood-plastic composite) board. Both can look fantastic and last for years — the right choice really comes down to your budget, how much maintenance you're up for, and the look you're after.

Timber decking

Hardwood or treated pine decking has a warmth and natural grain that composite products still can't fully replicate. It's typically a lower upfront cost than WPC, but it does need ongoing care — periodic oiling or staining to stop it greying and drying out, especially through hot Pakenham summers.

WPC composite decking

WPC boards are made from a mix of recycled wood fibre and recycled plastic, which means significantly less maintenance — no staining or oiling required — and strong resistance to splintering, warping and insect damage. The trade-off is a higher upfront material cost, though that's often offset by years of avoided maintenance.

Our take: if you want a low-maintenance deck you can enjoy without a yearly upkeep job, WPC is usually worth the extra spend. If you love the natural timber look and don't mind the occasional weekend with an oil and brush, hardwood is still a great choice.

A note on sustainability

If sustainable materials matter to you, both options have credible choices — certified, responsibly sourced hardwood on one hand, and recycled-content composite boards on the other. It's worth asking your supplier about sourcing and recycled content either way.
